On the Radio

New York

Radio on the airwaves in New York City has always played Freestyle, albeit in varying degrees.  Right now, there are currently three (four if you include Long Island) radio stations that are playing Freestyle on a somewhat regular basis.

WKTU 103.5 FM ('KTU)

Ever since 'KTU came back on the scene in 1996, they have been playing freestyle on a rather consistent basis.  The ORIGINAL KTU was widely known for playing all of our old school freestyle favorites throughout the 1980's on the old 92.3 frequency, but since returning, they have Freestyle in rotation and on various mix shows.  The most popular show which showcases freestyle is the 'Freestyle Free-For-All' which is broadcast on Sunday nights and is hosted by Freestyle Diva Judy Torres.  The show has been running quite successfully for many years now.

WCAA 105.9 FM (Latino Mix)

This Spanish station had been receptive to New School Freestyle, and had daily mix shows running from Noon to 1 PM that featured some of the top Freestyle DJ's in the NYC area mixing new and old school Freestyle, but parent company Univison allegedly said no more English language music.

WNEW 102.7 FM (Mix 102.7)

After a number of format changes and tweaks, Mix has finally decided on a somewhat HOT AC format, but more recently, has been calling themselves “New York's Dance Station” - direct competition for KTU, you could say.  They have been playing a lot of 'classic dance', which includes a good amount of freestyle from the late 80's - mainly the hits.  Their sound resembles that of KTU when they first signed on back in 1996.  However, their presentation seems to be very good, and people are enjoying the station.  Hopefully, they will stick with the format.

WXXP 105.3 FM (Party 105)
Although it's not a NYC station, Long Island's Party 105.3 has been pumping out great dance music since 1999 and is one of the longest running pure dance stations still on the air.  They also tend to play some Freestyle tracks here and there, which is always a good thing.
